STRUCTURE

There are 12 laboratories in the structure of the Institute. These are the laboratories of synthesis of polymers, ion - exchange resins, petrol - chemical synthesis, chemistry of medicinal substances, physical chemistry, chemistry of physiologically active compounds, chemistry of fertilizers and salts, physico - chemical analysis methods, inorganic synthesis, chemistry of inorganic materials, chemistry of natural compounds, analytical chemistry, and patent department, which are headed by academicians of NAS RK - B.A. Zhubanov, E.E. Ergozhin; corresponding members of NAS RK - D.Kh. Sembaev, K.D. Praliev; doctors of sciences - T.K.Dzhumadilov, K.B. Erzhanov, U.Zh. Dzhusipbekov, V.A. Solomin, K.T. Arynov, V.A. Sinyaev; candidates of chemical sciences - B.Zh. Dzhiembaev, A.S. Musina, I.I. Nikitina. There are also included two groups - Chemistry of oil and gaz and Chemistry of inorganic substances, headed by doctor of chemical sciences S.R.Konuspaev, and candidate of chemical sciences A.S. Seriev.

SHORT BACKGROUND

The Institute of Chemical Sciences was founded in May 1945 on the basis of chemical laboratories of the Chemical - Metallurgical Institute ( Decree of CPC of the Kazakh SSR #689, dated December 6,1944 and Decree of the Presidium of the Kazakh branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences #14, dated May 15, 1945). In 1946 the Institute of Chemical Sciences, together with other Institutes, was included in the newly organized Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR.

The first director of the Institute in 1945 was professor Goryaev M.I., who became later on a founder of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR and an academician thereof.

From 1946 to 1968 the Institute was headed by an outstanding scientist, a founder of chemical education and science in Kazakhstan, an organizer and the first dean of the chemical faculty and the head of the chair of inorganic chemistry of the Kazakh State University (1934), a founder of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences (1946) and an academician thereof, A.B. Bekturov. In accordance with the Resolutions of the Scientific Council of our Institute and the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan # 412, dated July 5, 1991 with the purpose to immortalize the memory and in connection with the 90th anniversary of academician Abiken Bekturov, his name was given to the Order of Red Banner Institute of Chemical Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

From 1968 to 1988 the Institute was headed by a prominent scientist, one of the founders of the studies in the field of chemistry of high molecular compounds in Kazakhstan, academician B.A. Zhubanov. In accordance with the Resolution of the Scientific Council of the Institute, dated July 27, 1995 and Decree of the Presidium of the NAS RK # 73, dated October 11, 1995, he was confirmed as An Honorable Director of the Institute.

Since 1988 up till now the Institute is headed by a prominent scientist in the field of chemistry of high molecular compounds and ion exchange, academician of NAS RK, professor Ergozhin E.E.

For this time the Institute entered the number of the leading scientific centers, made an indisputable contribution to the development of chemical science. In accordance with Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR, for the progress in the development of science and preparation of highly qualified specialists, the Institute of Chemical sciences was awarded the Order of Red Banner on March 13, 1969.

Many of the leaders of scientific subdivisions are pupils of outstanding representatives of the Kazakhstani science, who were at the beginning of chemical studies and education in the Republic. These were academicians of the Academy of science of the Kazakh SSR A.B. Bekturov, M.I. Goryaev, D.V. Sokol’skiy, S.R. Rafikov (corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Science), B.V. Suvorov, corresponding members of the Academy of Science of the Kazakh SSR B.A. Beremzhanov, I.I. Azerbaev, doctor of chemical sciences D.V. Sokolov, doctor of technical sciences L.N. Sheludyakov. It was thanks to them that scientific teams were formed, institutes of chemical profile were created, and principal directions in the development of chemical science, education and industry in the Republic were determined.

According to the state of matters as for May 2001, at the Institute there work 232 persons, 122 of which are research scientists. Among them there are two academicians of NAS RK (B.A. Zhubanov, E.E. Ergozhin), and three corresponding members of NAS RK ( E.A. Bekturov, D.Kh. Sembaev, K.D. Praliev), 22 doctors and 85 candidates of science, 30 post - graduate students. Ten workers of the Institute are acting members (academicians) of the New - York Academy of Science of the USA. There are 12 laboratories in the structure of the Institute.

RESEARCH FIELDS

At present the studies in the following fields are being successfully developed at the Institute: synthesis of ion - exchange, oxidation - reduction, selective sorbents and membranes, polyfunctional polymers and construction materials on the basis of fundamental studies of catalytic polycondensation, polymerization, chemical modification and complex - formation;

study of the processes of conjugated oxidation and oxidation ammonolysis of hydrocarbons;

studies in the field of fine organic synthesis, stereochemistry, conformational analysis of spatially isomeric nitrogen-, phosphorus- and selene - containing saturated heterocyclic compounds, including acetylene and polyacetylene derivatives, with the purpose of creation of original domestic medicinal preparations with analgestic, locally anaesthetic, anti - cancer, anti - tuberculosis, hypotensic, anti - glaucoma activity, study of the interaction of their chemical, physical and biological properties with the spatial structure;

creation of progressive technologies for the processing of technogenic raw materials of chemical industry into inorganic materials, including ecologically pure fertilizers, compositional and biological materials, corrosion inhibitors for the protection of metal upon oil transportation, reagents for the extraction of precious metals;

chemico - analytical works for quantitative assessment of chemical contamination of soil and water; chemico - ecological monitoring of the regions of Kazakhstan.
